The Kampong Glam Historic District is bordered by Ophir Road, Victoria Street, Jalan Sultan and Beach Road. It was once the historic seat of Malay royalty in Singapore and a settlement used to exist at the mouth of Rochor River.
The kampong's name probably came from the Gelam Tree (malaleunca leucadendron) which used to be plentiful in the area. Go down the trail, you can treat yourself to exotic Middle Eastern fare at Arab Street or try some local food such as the popular nasi padang and other Malay food. Don't forget to shop for an interesting sovenir from one of the shops in the areas.
